Greetings from the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity at VCU!
The Fireman’s Challenge is a philanthropic effort created to benefit and raise awareness of the VCU Evans-Haynes Burn Center. This effort consists of a week of events hosted by Pi Kappa Alpha at VCU. Throughout this week, 500 women from nine sororities on VCU’s Monroe Park Campus will participate in these events across the Richmond area. These activities range from an iron chef competition to a dodgeball tournament, with the week concluding with a community field day typifying some of the day-to-day duties of a firefighter. In total, there are over six separate events dispersed throughout the week that range from three to four hours each.
The events, which are designed to test the resourcefulness, creativity, and athleticism of the sororities, are all based on the day in the life of a firefighter. The Culinary Skills of each sorority are tested in Feed the Fireman. Their creativity and communication skills are tested during the PIKE Pageant. Finally, the athletic prowess of the sororities will be tested during our Dodgeball Tournament and Main Event.
We, the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity welcome you to join our cause. All money raised during the week of competitive events goes directly to the Evans-Haynes Burn Center. The Evans-Haynes Burn Center is dedicated to providing excellent interdisciplinary, holistic care for patients and their families across the lifespan, from point of injury until optimal restoration of function. The Burn Center serves as the regional resource for the care of acute burn and reconstructive needs of burn survivors. With a 16-bed unit that treats 250-300 patients per year including pediatric and adult burn patients, the Burn Unit also provides education to EMT’s, special government forces and rural hospitals.
Pi Kappa Alpha has always been a generous supporter of the greater Richmond area. PIKE strives to improve the community through effective philanthropy and public service events. Please assist us in continuing to make this annual VCU Fireman’s Challenge event a memorable and successful one. Together, with your support, we can continue to unite Richmond in support of a local and worthy cause.
The following is a brief history of each year of the VCU Fireman’s Challenge:
Our First Fireman’s Challenge Week was April 22nd to April 28th. Overall, The Lambda Chi Chapter of The Pi Kappa Alpha International Fraternity raised $5,888.64 for the Evans-Haynes Burn Center with the help of the sorority women of Alpha Epsilon Phi, Alpha Gamma Delta, alpha Kappa Delta Phi, Alpha Omicron Pi, Alpha Sigma Alpha, Phi Mu, Sigma Sigma Sigma, and Zeta Tau Alpha. The winning sorority for the First Annual Fireman’s Challenge was alpha Kappa Delta Phi.
The Second Annual Fireman’s Challenge set a Lambda Chi Chapter record donation for the Evans-Haynes Burn Center, $10,029.30. We were grateful to have the full participation of all sororities that participated in the inaugural VCU Fireman’s Challenge, and also for the addition of Alpha Xi Delta to the week-long competition. Overall, we reached our goal of having the second year of the event even bigger and more successful than the first year. Thanks again to all that participated and donated time and countless hours to the cause. And, congratulations to the winner of the Second Annual VCU Fireman’s Challenge, Alpha Gamma Delta! PIKE looks forward to FC2014 to continue our support of the Evans-Haynes Burn Center at VCU Medical Center.
