From Aug. 24 through Oct. 1, the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, also known as PIKE, will begin working to become the newest fraternity on campus.

PIKE expansion consultants Justin Kohrs and Ray Holmgren will coordinate the colonization project.

“œWe are excited to have the opportunity to come to Southeastern, and we are looking forward to working hard to become a highly successful organization both on campus and in the community,” Holmgren stated in a press release to The Lion’s Roar. œ”Southeastern boasts one of the strongest Greek systems in Louisiana, and we believe that this is exactly the kind of place that PIKE needs to be.”

The colonization was approved on May 1 after the Interfraternity Council (IFC) voted five to one allowing the process to move forward. According to PIKE Expansion Director Joe Wegelin, who pitched the idea to the IFC, the colonization will take place in three stages. During the current phase (phase one) at least six PIKE alumni will be assembled and trained as an advisory board that will oversee the formation of the chapter. Phase two includes several meetings of this advisory board. The expansion will conclude in the third phase, scheduled to end in Fall 2013, with the establishment of PIKE’s charter.

PIKE was founded at the University of Virginia in 1868 and has since grown into 225 international chapters. According to Holmgren, in this year alone Pike has expanded to Cornell, Arizona State, Northwestern State and Bridgewater State in addition to Southeastern.

“œPi Kappa Alpha recruits quality men who are committed to academic achievement, campus leadership, competitive athletics and most importantly, those who pride themselves on being gentlemen,” Holmgren stated.  “œWe are seeking men who desire more than the average fraternity experience.  We take a unique approach when establishing a new chapter.”

According to Holmgren, the fraternity recruits its members on a recommendation basis.  Recommendations come from several sources such as alumni, coaches, faculty and staff, various student organizations, their leaders and the sorority women of Southeastern.
