Matthew Kenneth Ballard, 21, of Venice Drive, Clearfield, KY passed away Tuesday, July 12, 2005 in
Olive Hill, KY from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident when he apparently lost control and slid
beneath an oncoming truck. Matthew was not speeding and the accident was not alcohol related.

Matthew, a senior at Morehead State University who was pursuing a sports management degree, was a
student assistant for MSU football and a member of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He was a graduate of
Rowan County Senior High School where he was a member of the football and baseball teams. He was a
four year employee of Wal-Mart. Matthew was also a Little League umpire and a field is now named in
his memory. He was member of East Barbourville Baptist Church in Barbourville, KY.

In honor of Matthew, the Matthew K. Ballard Memorial Scholarship Fund was created. After three and a
half years, the fund has been endowed and will forever continue to support Rowan County Senior High
School Alumnus and the Fraternal Brothers. The scholarship will be awarded to two members of Pi
Kappa Alpha and two Rowan County Senior High School seniors who will be attending Morehead State
University. Also this year we will be donating a portion of the proceeds to the American Cancer Society.
To help fund these scholarships and ensure that it will continue to grow, the Eta Eta Chapter of the Pi
Kappa Alpha International Fraternity has established an annual golf scramble. The tournament takes
place on the last weekend in April of each year at Eagle Trace Golf Course and continues to grow. This
year for the 10th Annual Ballard Cup, Fraternal brothers and supporters hope to raise over $15,000.
