Members of the UK community participate in Water Pong 2013.

October 25th, 2013 Lexington, KY Last Sunday, October 20th, Pi Kappa Alpha and Delta Zeta teamed up to put on the first ever “I Have a Choice” Water-Pong Tournament for the University of Kentucky campus. I Have a Choice is a national awareness campaign which works to educate college-aged students about the dangers of alcohol abuse, inspiring them to examine their lifestyles and make informed decisions regarding these substances. The rules are simple: teams of 2 square off head to head, starting with 10 plastic cups each. The first team to sink a ping pong ball into all of the other team’s cups wins the game. Over 20 different Greek organizations signed up two 2-person teams and competed for Water-Pong glory, while enjoying delicious food and great tunes by local DJ Cameron Hardin.

PIKE & DZ set up various activities for attendees related to fulfilling the mission of the “I Have a Choice” campaign. The event featured an “I Have a Choice” Board on which various members of the community wrote their name and organization, signifying their commitment to making the smart choice when it comes to alcohol use. Attendees could play interactive games like Alcohol Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune which taught them practical knowledge about effects of alcohol and safety. All attendees who participated in the activities were eligible for a drawing at the end of the event. American Express gift cards were given out to the winners of the drawings. Nearly 300 students attended and the social aspect of the event showed the community alcohol is not necessary for members of our organizations to have a good time.

Pi Kappa Alpha would like to thank the Student Wellness Ambassadors, an on campus group which promotes healthy living, for helping coordinate the event. Also a big congratulations to the winners of our tournament: Kappa Alpha and Alpha Phi. Finally, congratulations to Chi-Omega who were the spirit winners. Chi-O brought out the highest proportion of membership to the event from all the organizations on campus.
