The Garnet

Updates from the Theta Omicron Chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha at Indiana State University
November, 2017

What is This?
Over the course of our almost 40-year history, Theta Omicron has occasionally published The Garnet and we’re reviving that tradition. The Garnet is a Chapter-focused communication that is targeted to Alumni. It’s intended to be a quick update on what’s happening with Theta O at ISU. Our goal is to publish this each month throughout the school year. We hope you enjoy the update and we thank you for taking the time to stay connected.

Homecoming Results
Pikes once again dominated Homecoming by winning Overall Fraternity, Overall Pairing, Sycamore Sync and all float awards. The theme for this year was TV shows and the Pike Float was Scooby Doo. The Trike team finished fifth. Tent City was once again well attended with several alumni coming back for the first time in years. The Grounds at Seventh and Locust, the chapter’s new Residences and Education Center, was open for guided tours. A huge thank you to the Homecoming chair, Andrew Hile for all of his work.

The 2018 Homecoming will be October 12th & 13th. Look for more information about this Once-Every-Five-Years Super Homecoming. As we say, “If you can only make it to one homecoming every few years, make it to a Super Homecoming. It’s your best chance to see the most alumni.”

Service Update
Pikes for Change was September 11th-15th. As a part of this fundraising event, approximately 30 Pikes slept outside in boxes around the campus fountain on two different nights. Donations were accepted throughout the week. Another fundraising activity that the Chapter has done this semester is working the concession stand at the ISU Volleyball games.

Through both of these activities, Pikes will be donating $5,500 to buy clothes and toys for Bethany House, a shelter for battered spouses and their children. This will provide a Christmas for people who might not otherwise have one.

Delta Omicron Class
Twenty-nine Delta Omicron class members were initiated at The Grounds on Friday, October 27th. The Associated Educator, Peyton Webb did an excellent job of preparing these new members for being Pikes. Taylor Hitson is the Delta Omicron Class President.

Barn Dance was November 11th at ‘A Place in Time’ in West Terre Haute. Six busloads of Pikes and their dates had a great evening filled with music, dancing and a bonfire.

Hile Family Honored with Legacy Award
Last weekend during halftime at the Indiana State University Parents’ Weekend football game, one of our active brothers, Andrew Hile and his family, received the ISU Legacy Award. The Legacy Award recognizes multi-generation families that have shown continued interest in and support of Indiana State University. The Hile family has had three generations of children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews who have gone through Indiana State University earning around 24 degrees by 16 members of the Hile family. Current Active, Andrew Hile has done a great deal for Theta Omicron and continues to work hard in seeing PIKE succeed. Andrew’s father, Bart Hile, is also a Theta Omicron Pike.

The Old Gold Pikecast
The Alumni Association is transforming The Old Gold newsletter into The Old Gold Pikecast. We’re bringing alumni communications into the 21st century with a live video production that will inform you about interesting and important news from the chapter, the University and Pike national organization.

You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions and tell us what you’d like to hear about on future episodes. This is just another way to keep you informed about the legacy you helped create and to help us establish friendship on a firmer and more lasting basis. A huge thank you to Alumnus, David Pittman for everything he’s doing (which is everything!) on the Webcast.

To stay informed of our first Pikecast, and to receive the archived video if you’re unable to tune-in live, please register at The Old Gold Pikecast or by going to:
