The spring semester at WVU is complete and the active Chapter is making plans for the fall semester of 2017. Alpha Rho currently has 63 members. Chapter Officers include: Nick Paci ’15, President; Josh Harkins ’15, Vice President; Michael Bottone ’16, Recording Secretary and Lewis Park ’15, Treasurer. Alumni Corporation Officers include Bill Brewer ’73, President; John Baum ’78, Executive Vice President; Jim Ransbottom ’99, Secretary and Paul Farmer ’52, Treasurer.
The Alpha Rho Alumni Corporation continues to provide administrative and financial support to the active chapter. As a result of the dedicated care and managerial oversight by Bill Brewer and others, the chapter house has been astutely maintained over the past 11 years of occupancy. The resurgence of active chapter is working well and the success in reestablishing Alpha Rho is attributed to efforts from the following alumni: Bill Brewer, Jim Ransbottom, John Baum, John Kaiser ’10, Pat DeLeonibus ’09, Benji Hedrick ’98 and others.
Since 2010, the Alpha Rho Alumni Corporation has been in dispute with our mortgage lender, First United Bank & Trust. The dispute involves the monthly loan charges on our first trust mortgage dating back to January 2007 to present. Fortunately, the WVU Law School Clinic took our case. The suit against the bank was filed in 2014 and we received a favorable ruling from the Federal District Court of Northern West Virginia on the breach of contract claim. The bank appealed this decision to the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Virginia. Our WVU Law School attorneys prevailed and the court denied the bank’s appeal. Damages were set at $339,255 plus post judgment interest for a total of $341,063. We have received full payment in this amount.
With the proceeds from the settlement of the bank dispute, we must address the repayment of the debts associated with maintaining and paying off the second mortgage owed to eight brothers and the estates of two brothers who passed away. The second mortgage stands at $591,000 and the Alpha Rho Alumni Corporation has been in default of interest payments since January 2011. There will be a time lapse to allow the Board to explore the various options to best address this critical issue. Consequently, we must call upon our Brothers for financial support.
The first trust has been paid each month with rent income from in-house actives and the Spruce Street prosperity. However, it was never our intention this income would cover the payment of the second trust. Instead, the plan was to engage in periodic requests for contributions from Alpha Rho Alumni.
In addition to financial support, we need your assistance in recruiting chapter members. Recruitment is vital to the growth and success of Alpha Rho and we need your help to find the future leaders of our chapter. If you have a legacy or know a young man who would be a great addition to the Order, please share this information with one of our officers or member of our Board of Directors.
Thus far, alumni support in building the best fraternity house in the state of West Virginia has been incredible. Now, we need your help with the 2017 Alpha Rho Annual Campaign. Our goal is simple:
I invite you to give back to Alpha Rho today. If you find it within your means, please consider a gift of $1,000. If $1,000 is more than you can manage, consider a gift of $750, $500, $250 or even $100. Whatever you choose to give, your dedication and commitment to Alpha Rho will make a significant difference to our chapter.
To make your gift, click the ‘Support the Campaign’ on the right hand side of this page.
Alpha Rho is deeply appreciative of the legal work performed by Mike Barill, Clinic Coordinator and the WVU Clinic Law Student Attorneys assigned to our case. This exceptional work effort has resulted in a meaningful decision in our favor in a very complicated legal action without the time lapse and expense of a court trial or oral argument on appeal. We are planning a special financial contribution by Alpha Rho Alumni to the Law School.
Thank you in advance for your commitment to Alpha Rho!
William C. Brewer
